Conservative responses to the partial release of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how heavy censorship cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Defends Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department officials justified the redactions with intense hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this open with the American people about such a sensitive legal matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter describing the censorship procedure.
Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's identity and image appear in some of the materials, the widespread black blocks raise significant questions about the information may be concealed beneath them. A number of Republicans swiftly called for greater transparency.
“People are furious and walking away,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions break the law, and implied that a subsequent legislature may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this file dump grossly fails to adhere to both the intent and the wording of the act,” he continued.
Some Conservative Commentators Swing Behind the Disclosure
But, some rightwing pundits and Trump allies came out strongly in support of the administration.
The disclosed materials—originating from a justice department led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are entirely censored, and numerous of the individuals shown in pictures have their identities obscured.
Yet some are not, featuring high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, enabled some conservative figures to launch the offensive.
“This is quite rich how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Response
Clinton has consistently said he knew of no illegal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been hiding those files for an extended period only to release them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“This is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and hide permanently. So they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photographs as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response added.
Overall Rightwing Comment Remains Muted
However, overall comment on the right was comparatively subdued after the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the loud calls for action that preceded the congressional approval to pass a law requiring the files' release.
The commentator, who recently accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest advocates for a complete release. In February, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing influencers were provided physical binders of files that included no new information.
